  Communication Inspiration

My motivation for studying communication is a desire to understand how and why people say and do the things they do. I also want to learn how to effectively communicate my feelings, thoughts and ideas to others. I think that every aspect of life can greatly benefit from a strong sense of how to effectively communicate.

An understanding of communication would be very effective in my personal life. My husband and I own a business together in addition to being parents, my being a student and my husband having a full time job assisting mentally handicapped individuals. Being able to effectively communicate with each other, our child and others around us is very important in our life. Effective communication reduces tension and stress in our home and keeps everything running smoothly. My husband and I are able to do everything we need to do with accuracy and trust that each one is upholding their responsibilities. Of course we have misunderstandings and disagreements, but effective communication helps us lessen the impact of these events. We are able to guide the conversations through to a solution that is good for everyone instead of lashing out emotionally, which would lead to more problems.

The closest example of my own personal definition of communication is found in chapter two of the text. “Speech communication is a human process through which we make sense out of the world and share that sense with others,” (Trenholm, 2011, p. 20). I chose this definition because, to me, communicating with others is a process in which individuals share wisdom and experiences in order to make examples of how to live life.

However, individual variation counts for a great deal as two people exposed to the same stimuli still bring different personal experiences to the communication “table” and will express opinions, thoughts and ideas based on those experiences. We try to make sense of the world around us, which occurs at a personal and individual level and then we share those experiences with others, imparting our wisdom and beliefs based on what we have experienced. In turn, the person we are communicating with imparts their wisdom and beliefs on us. Together, we are able to define our reality. This is the aspect of communication that is most fascinating to me and has inspired me to pursue a degree in Communications.
